3 Types of Water

If you thought that water comes in three forms, water, steam, and ice, think again. In terms of water damage, water takes many forms. The type of water that has flooded your home can significantly affect the remediation steps required. In general, water is broken down into three categories as outlined below

  • Category 1 – Category 1 water is water that was initially clean and safe for human consumption at the releasing source. For example, a water heater overflow releases clean, Category 1 water. However, as the water mixes with other surfaces such as carpets, drywall, subflooring, and so on, it can become contaminated. In addition, the longer the water sits or as temperatures rise, Category 1 water can degrade. Microorganisms in the water may flourish as conditions worsen. Examples of Category 1 water incidents include: burst pipes, appliance line leaks, and vertically falling rainwater.
  • Category 2 – Category 2 water is water that was released with some degree of contamination and could cause sickness or discomfort if consumed by humans. Like Category 1 water, Category 2 water becomes progressively more contaminated as conditions worsen. Examples of Category 2 water incidents include: toilet overflows (without feces), water discharge from a dishwasher, and soapy bathwater.
  • Category 3 – Category 3 water is water that is extremely contaminated and could cause death or serious illness if consumed by humans. This is the worst category of the three types of water. Examples of Category 3 water incidents include: sewage backups, natural floodwaters from rivers and streams, seawater, and ground surface water.
